Housebuilders help feed exotic animals at Gentleshaw Widlife Centre in Eccleshall

Bovis Homes have made a donation to help staff at a wildlife sanctuary in Eccleshall feed the birds of prey and exotic animals in their care.

The housebuilder – who is part of Vistry Group and are building 350 new homes at Partridge Walk, off Stone Road in Stafford – has contributed £500 to Gentleshaw Wildlife Centre.

The sanctuary, which is based at Fletchers Garden Centre, offers permanent and temporary homes to more than 30 different species of birds of prey, primates, reptiles and raccoons.

The centre is a registered charity which also runs a hospital unit to care for injured birds of prey. Paying visitors are invited to the sanctuary to listen to educational talks about exotic species or to watch the birds in training sessions.

Jenny Morgan, director for Gentleshaw Wildlife Centre, said: “Gentleshaw Wildlife Centre has been caring for unwanted and rescued exotic animals for 31 years. The charity cares for over 100 animals including primates, reptiles, birds of prey, meerkats and more.

“The £500 donation that we have gratefully received will cover two weeks of the specialist feeds we need to keep our residents healthy. The money will cover meat and specialist diets for our monkeys, birds of prey and many of our other residents. We are most grateful for this donation.”

Freya Halsall, marketing manager for Vistry North Central Midlands, said: “Gentleshaw Wildlife Centre is a wonderful place which cares for an incredible collection of animals and is just a few miles up the road from our Partridge Walk location and our regional headquarters in Stafford.

“It is lovely to hear that our donation will assist the centre in its work by providing funding to help pay for special feed.

“Our team went along to the sanctuary to say hello to the team there and to gain a better appreciation of the work that they do on a daily basis to help the creatures in their care, some of which have been ill-treated or abandoned. The birds of prey in particular are magnificent and it was great to hear and see first-hand how this centre is not only giving these animals a safe home but also educating people, many of them schoolchildren, about the natural world.”
