Housebuilder donates food parcels to Peterborough church’s Christmas pantry

A Peterborough-based housebuilder has supplied food parcels to a local church to help families struggling with the cost-of-living crisis over the Christmas period.

Staff from Vistry East Midlands, the parent brand of Bovis Homes whose head office is located off Bakewell Road in the town, donated food parcels to Christ the Servant King Church in Hampton.

The collection was organised by Miriam Hines, a customer service co-ordinator at Vistry East Midlands and a member of the church.

Miriam, who attends Christ the Servant King Church every Sunday with her son, said: “The food which has been donated by Vistry staff will go towards the church’s Christmas food parcel pantry. Last year we provided Christmas food parcels to over 60 families; this year we are expecting over 100.

“I would like to thank my colleagues for their kind donations to the church. The food parcels will go a long way this Christmas and will support many families during this tough period.”

Miriam is also a volunteer with the Trussell Trust Peterborough Food Bank, which holds a session at the church every Thursday evening.

Her role as a volunteer involves aiding families who have been referred to the foodbank by care professionals and supporting them with their dietary requests and any special requirements they may need.

Miriam said: “It is not only about handing out food parcels to those in need, but also being a friendly face and somebody to talk to.

“Many of those who come to us feel very alone and vulnerable. This year we have seen an increase in those being referred. It makes you realise that any one of us may need the support of a foodbank someday.”

Vistry is building under its Bovis Homes brand at the Hampton Water housing location off London Road, just a mile from Christ the Servant King Church.

Fraser Hopes, managing director of Vistry East Midlands, said: “Our staff have been extremely generous in supporting the church’s Christmas food pantry this year and I would like to thank all of those who donated.

“Times are hard for many people at the moment, so I am sure these donations of food and gifts will be greatly appreciated by those in need this Christmas.”
