Groundbreaking ceremony marks start of Foundry Lea development near Bridport

The Foundry Lea development at Vearse Farm has celebrated a significant milestone with a groundbreaking ceremony marking the official start of construction onsite. The new sustainable neighbourhood near Bridport will include up to 760 much-needed new homes, a primary school, employment space, local retail and community facilities, and accessible open space.

The event on Wednesday 17 April brought together key members of the consortium team from Barratt David Wilson Homes and Vistry Group and a representative from Symondsbury Parish Council to place shovels in the ground for the first time. This significant milestone represents a pivotal moment in Foundry Lea's journey towards becoming a cornerstone of the Bridport community.

Supporting the local economy, Foundry Lea will use local suppliers, craftspeople, and tradespeople in the delivery of the new community. Green space and sustainability are paramount in the masterplan for Foundry Lea, with generous green infrastructure, dedicated wildlife areas, a network of pedestrian and cycle links, and the use of sustainably sourced and managed materials.

Now that the team have broken ground at Foundry Lea, the foundations of the first private homes and show homes are anticipated to be completed by Autumn 2024. The first families will be moving into their new homes by Summer 2025.

Andrew Spicer, Managing Director at Barratt David Wilson Homes Exeter, said, “We’re thrilled to have broken ground at Foundry Lea with key members of the community. This project represents our commitment to delivering high-quality homes in Dorset and creating vibrant places that enhance the local area.”

Peter Sadler, Managing Director at Vistry Cornwall South West, said, “By building hundreds of sustainable, thoughtfully designed new homes that meet the needs of local people, we look forward to contributing positively to the Bridport community and working with local councillors for years to come."

Demonstrating their commitment to the local community, the Foundry Lea consortium is sponsoring this year’s Bridport Community Charter Fair and will be hosting a ‘Meet the Builder’ stall at the event on Saturday 18 May. As well as being an opportunity to provide information to local people on the homes coming soon to their area, they aim to inspire those who are considering a career in construction.
