Building surveying students gain practical experience at Barrow Gurney development

A group of students from the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol) took a day out of the classroom to visit Bovis Homes’ Woodlands development in Barrow Gurney.

The building surveying students enjoyed a site tour, where they were able to see the different build stages; learnt about the housebuilding process; and even tried their hand at bricklaying!

Construction director, Mick Arnold who conducted the tour with site manager, Alan Gilfillan commented: “It was wonderful to welcome the students to Woodlands and show them an active construction site. I was really impressed with the questions they asked and how engaged they were, it was fantastic to see their enthusiasm and we’ll be offering some work experience placements on the back of it.”

Rebecca, who’s in year two studying a BSc (hons) building surveying degree, said: “The team at Bovis Homes was very informative and helpful. I most enjoyed hearing how they tackled the different challenges presented by material issues and site conditions. Also, I found their innovative ideas and best practice incredibly helpful.”

Fellow student, Victoria added: “The visit was very informative and I loved the hands-on experience with the blocks and brick laying! The site staff were all friendly and welcoming and encouraged us to ask as many questions as possible. It was great to actually see the different stages of the buildings and the two different foundations in person rather than online or text book. I would love to go on a similar trip to this again and would encourage and recommend it to other students.”

UWE Bristol senior lecturer and programme leader, David Evans commented: “Visiting site helps the students enormously and really brings their learning to life. You can read about housebuilding but to be on site makes all the difference – especially when you can see the different build stages and the finished show home. It was invaluable and it’s definitely inspired them all.”

Woodlands is being built in joint venture partnership with Wates Developments. The development of 66 homes is surrounded by mature trees and woodland and will feature a play park, public open space, an attenuation basin and bat houses.

The development was named as a finalist in the residential development category in the Bristol Property Awards. It’s supporting the local community by contributing £1.54 million towards: education, library services, affordable housing, transport, plus sport and leisure facilities including contributions towards Barrow Gurney village hall, Long Ashton community centre, Long Ashton playing pitches and changing rooms.

There are currently four and five bedroom detached houses available. For more details on Woodlands visit www.bovishomes.co.uk
