Aspiring plumber finds dream position with Vistry
04 Feb 2022

Apprentice plumber Archie Kilminster has secured his dream position with one of the country’s largest housebuilding companies. The 21-year-old, from Gloucester, joined Vistry Group last September after a long search for a job in plumbing. Currently based at Vistry’s Twigworth Green in Gloucester ?" which includes the housebuilder’s Bovis Homes and Linden Homes brands ?" Archie is undertaking a Level 3 qualification in domestic plumbing and heating. As the country marks National Apprenticeship Week, Vistry is celebrating the benefits of apprenticeships for young people like Archie. He said: “I wasn’t sure exactly what I wanted to do at school, but I knew it would be something practical and to do with building. I knew that because whenever there were problems around the house growing up, I always wanted to try and fix them! “It wasn’t until I did a Level 2 course in Maintenance that I discovered how much I enjoyed plumbing. We learnt a range of different trades, but plumbing was by far my favourite. “Ever since then, I’d been looking for an opportunity to get into the trade as I knew it’s what I wanted to do. Plumbing apprenticeships are hard to come by, so I was really excited when I found this role.” Before his role at Vistry, Archie worked for various companies including a smaller housebuilder, a property maintenance firm, and a kitchen and bathroom fitting company. Archie said: “I enjoyed my previous jobs, but it was always plumbing that I could see myself doing. I’ve had a great experience with Vistry so far - I would definitely say it’s the best company I’ve worked for. “There is a fantastic sense of teamwork here at Twigworth Green. I’m always learning new things, and it’s been a pleasure to watch all the different team members work together. Their dedication inspires me to continue to ensure my work is perfect every time ?" we’re always striving for perfection. “Part of working as a team means that we all have to work together and help each other out. When one of the silos was leaking on site I made sure to fix it right away, taking some of the pressure off the rest of my team.” Archie, who currently attends Gloucestershire College every Wednesday as part of his apprenticeship, is due to complete his Level 3 course in September 2025. He added: “The college course is hard work, but it’s definitely made easier through the fact I’m working in the trade day in, day out and learning on the job. “I’m looking forward to finishing my college course and eventually becoming a qualified plumber. I would love to stay on at Vistry once my apprenticeship ends and work my way up the ladder with such a great company.” Darren Partridge, Vistry site manager at Twigworth Green, said: “We only look to take on the very best apprentices, offering them roles where they have the opportunity to progress and become valuable members of our team. “Since joining the company, Archie has shown himself to be punctual, keen to learn and proactive, and someone that we can see has a very bright future ahead of him. We look forward to seeing him develop into an excellent plumber over the next four years and beyond.”
