Outdoor spaces: 7 ways to make your garden the perfect spot for entertaining

Here are a few of our tips to make your outdoor space the perfect spot to host a get together.

1. Choose garden furniture that works for you…

When considering tableware and seating, the options are endless. Before deciding which style to go for, you need to consider its function. If you’re hoping to regularly host large family gatherings and have lots of friends over, a round or rectangular table with seating or a lounge area with a focal point would work perfectly. Ensure there’s enough room to allow guests to mingle and relax comfortably – benches could prove a good choice if space is limited.

2. …and pick a style you’ll love!

Whether you opt for a classic rattan style furniture set or go for DIY wood pallet furniture with beanbags, cushions and throws, you can really make your mark with your garden design. If you’ve already got a neglected garden furniture set lurking outside steps as simple as a fresh lick of paint, wiping away cobwebs and a thorough clean with hot, soapy water can bring lifeless table and chair sets back to life.

3. Add fairy lights and lanterns to your garden

Fairy lights and lanterns can create an atmospheric setting to your garden once the evening draws in. Lights wrapped round outdoor structures, a garden trellis or plant beds look magical, with the same being said for lanterns with tea lights dotted around your outdoor space. It’s such a simple, and budget friendly, way to add something special to the garden.

4. Invest in outdoor heating

Keep your gathering going late into the night with the help of outdoor heating. Patio heaters are popular choices but a fire pit, whether you make it yourself or install a ready-made design, makes for a fantastic focal point in your garden.

5. Consider the location of your BBQ

You’re bound to get the BBQ out when having family and friends over during the summer months. Ensure its position allows for plenty of ventilation but not far away enough that you can’t enjoy the company of your guests. If you’re lacking the space, or are hosting something more casual, a bucket grill is a great alternative.

6. Using plants to create a structure to your garden

Consider hedgerows, raised flower beds and potted plants to create distinct areas of your garden. Not only will plants give structure to a garden layout but they also make your space more private and sheltered, look great and do wonders for your mental health.

7. An outdoor bar brings the wow-factor to any garden

From something simple like a drinks trolley or an outdoor sideboard to more extravagant standalone structures, a garden bar is bound to impress your family and friends. Stock up on everyone’s favourite tipples and ask guests to help themselves. You could even entertain family and friends with your cocktail making skills.
