Site manager Scott building a new life in Cornwall
06 December 2017
Scott Lawson Multi-award-winning house builder Scott Lawson is delighted to be using his skills and experience to deliver much-needed new homes for Cornwall, having recently moved to the area from the North West.
Scott and his family - wife Zoe and daughter Nancy, five - have settled easily into life in Wadebridge in the north of the county after Bovis Homes appointed him to manage its Ocean Rise location on the outskirts of Hayle, near St Ives.
The move to the South West follows Scott's achievement in winning a number of accolades while in charge of building brand-new homes at Bovis Homes locations in and around Staffordshire.
"We're absolutely loving it in the South West," explained Scott. "We've been made to feel really welcome by everyone, Nancy is enjoying her new school, and I can definitely recommend the lifestyle down here."
As site manager at Ocean Rise, Scott is committed to working closely with local contractors to provide the community with high-quality homes in which he and his family would be proud to live.
"It's a beautiful place to live and work," said Scott, who has worked for Bovis Homes for the past decade.
"It's extremely close to the coast and it's ideally placed for trips to St Ives and Penzance - it's a superb location.
"As well as providing top-quality homes, my priority is to make sure that everyone on site goes home safe every evening.
"To achieve that, everyone working on site needs to take responsibility for ensuring the site is as safe as possible, for example by keeping their own areas clean and tidy, and making sure potentially dangerous tools and equipment are stored away properly.
"In addition to our Daily Activity Briefings (DABs) with members of the on-site team, we also hold regular meetings with the owners of the companies that we work with, to address any issues.
"Construction sites are very dangerous places if not managed correctly, but if we all follow the correct health and safety procedures, we can help reduce the risk of injuries."
His dedication to maintaining the highest standards of safety for everyone living and working on site has been underlined by his success in national house-building competitions.
In 2013, he was named the national winner of Bovis Homes' annual Health and Safety Award for his outstanding performance at the St George's Park location in Stafford.
The same year, he picked up a Highly Commended trophy at the National House Building Council's (NHBC) annual Health and Safety Awards.
Following his spell in the North West, Scott's new place of work, in the small town of Hayle, is situated at the mouth of the River Hayle, flowing into St Ives Bay.
Featuring a range of detached and semi-detached properties, Ocean Rise is less than eight miles from the popular holiday hotspots of St Ives and Penzance.
"While it's always busy on site, the pace of life generally is far more relaxed here," said Scott.
"There are always lots of good things to do at the weekend, like festivals and family events, and there are plenty of attractions. We love it."
