Vistry Western raises £10,800 for Papyrus

Vistry Western, which builds Bovis properties in the region, has raised a staggering £10,800 for Papyrus by holding a charity golf day.

Papyrus is the UK charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide and aims to not only support young people struggling, but to also increase awareness and shatter the stigma around suicide.

Stakeholders were invited to the event where they played golf at The Kendleshire’s 18 hole course and a putting competition, auction and raffle also took place.

Managing director, Emma Colin commented: “It was a fantastic event, which enabled us to raise awareness and £10,800 for Papyrus, our charity of the year. It also provided us with the perfect opportunity to see our subcontractors and suppliers in a more relaxed setting and have some fun in the process.”

Emma added: “We’ve supported the charity with bake sales, football matches, competitions, raffles and as a company-wide initiative we’re taking part in the Vistry Voyage, which sees hundreds of staff carry a commemorative book 1,163 miles across the country from north to south without the assistance of any motorised transport – whether it’s running, cycling, or even horse-riding!

“The issue of suicide is one that is important to all of us as a business, particularly as it affects so many of the people who work in our industry. It has long been recognised that the housebuilding industry has one of the highest suicide rates of all the professions.”

Suicide is also the biggest killer of young people under the age of 35 in the UK. Ged Flynn, chief executive of the national charity PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide, said: “We would like to say a big thank you to Vistry Western for their support and arranging a fantastic golf day which will help us to continue giving hope to young people who are struggling with life.

“Generous donations help to pay for potentially life-saving calls, texts and emails to our confidential HOPELINEUK service, which offers support and advice to young people and anyone who is worried about a young person who may be having thoughts of suicide.

“Funding also helps PAPYRUS to engage with local communities and volunteers in suicide prevention projects and supports the training we deliver to individuals and groups, equipping people with the skills to recognise and respond to suicidal behaviour.

“We believe that many young suicides are preventable and together we can all help to keep our communities suicide-safe.”
