Double the reason to celebrate! Wellington site manager awarded national accolade for house building quality again

For the second year running, site manager Tom Jupp has been awarded a prestigious NHBC (National House Building Council) Pride in Job Quality Award 2023, for building homes of exceptional quality at Monument View in Wellington.

The former Royal Marine works for Vistry South West, which builds Bovis  properties, and oversees the dual-branded Somerset site. Tom (29) won the award last year, despite it being his first year in site management.

Pride in the Job recognises the top site managers in the country. Running for 43 years, the accolade – awarded by the UK’s leading new homes warranty and insurance provider – is the most highly regarded in the house-building industry.

Judging for the awards is rigorous and began in July last year. Each site manager is assessed across six key areas of site management: consistency, attention to detail, leadership, interpretation of drawings and specifications, technical expertise and health and safety.

Tom lives in Glastonbury and has been hailed as one of the very best site managers in the UK. He previously served as a Royal Marine for six years and worked in the Yeovil Helicopter Force, as well as other areas including counter-terrorism and humanitarian aid.

He joined the company as a trainee and his sharp eye for detail and strong work ethic quickly stood out – leading to his promotion to assistant site manager where he was mentored by Gary French. Gary is the site manager at Blackmore Meadows in Stalbridge, who has just won a Quality Award for the third year running and was crowned the Regional Award winner in 2022.

Tom commented: “I’m over the moon to have won a Quality Award again. By ensuring consistency, we’ve been able to maintain the site at a high standard, which has provided us with the time and space to find new ways to improve. Whether it’s protecting materials, managing trades or even picking up litter, it makes such a difference to the overall quality.

“Ultimately, every day has to be a Pride in the Job day! If you can create an ideal working environment for the carpenters, electricians, plumbers etc then you enable them to do their best work. You also have to put yourself in the shoes of a customer, as it’s vital to see things from their point of view – the surroundings are just as important as the homes.

“The whole team has really pulled together and I hope we can achieve the hat-trick next year!”

Managing director Paul Moran commented: “We’re incredibly proud of Tom and the team. Winning a Quality Award is a fantastic achievement but to win twice in a row is seriously impressive.

“Tom works on a dual-branded site, which requires strong site management as there are many different housetypes. His Royal Marine background has proved to be a great foundation and we wish him the best in the next stage of the competition – he is an outstanding site manager.”

Commenting on the awards, Steve Wood, CEO at NHBC said: “Congratulations to all the winners who should feel proud to have received a Pride in the Job Award. Pride in the Job is firmly at the heart of NHBC’s mission to raise standards in the housing industry. It is important we recognise the vital role site managers play in ensuring new homes are delivered on time, on safe sites and to exacting construction quality standards. This accolade recognises the best site managers across the UK and celebrates how much Tom has inspired his team by going the extra mile to deliver homes of the highest quality.”

The Quality Award winners will now go on to compete for Seal of Excellence and Regional Awards in the autumn, with the national Supreme Award winners unveiled in January 2024.

Three of Tom’s colleagues also won a coveted award: Gary French at Blackmore Meadows in Stalbridge, Ollie Smart at Bay View in Northam and Marcus Ford at Tithe Barn in Exeter.

Tom is delivering Monument View, which features 205 new homes, along with areas of green open space and a play park.
