A housebuilder in Sawtry has inspired one of the residents at its new development to volunteer for a local charity.
Vistry Group, which is building new Bovis Homes properties at Judith Gardens in Sawtry, donated money earlier this year to fund long-life milk for Sawtry foodbank’s summer food parcels for school children.
The foodbank is run by local charity CARESCO, which is based off Green End Road and has been serving the community in Sawtry since 1982 in a variety of ways. Other services include a carers support group, a Christmas Day party, a charity shop and a car scheme for medical appointments.
When one of the residents at Judith Gardens heard about Vistry’s donation, he contacted them to see how he could help too. He’s now volunteering as a car scheme co-ordinator between clients and volunteer drivers.
He said: “I moved into Judith Gardens in March this year to be closer to family. I have been blessed with two grandsons born in the last two years and being right on the A1 means travelling to see them in Bedfordshire and Nottinghamshire is much easier.
“The sales advisor at Judith Gardens was aware that I was keen on voluntary work, and as I was new to the area, she suggested I talk to the CARESCO manager. At that first meeting in September this year, I was offered a role which I was happy to accept.
“CARESCO runs a car scheme for Sawtry residents needing transport to the hospital, for example. My role will be to function as a co-ordinator between clients and volunteer drivers, although in some situations I may also drive myself if no one else is available.
“When I retired, I knew I wanted to continue volunteering when and where I could. I have been involved in other volunteering opportunities throughout my life and having moved to a new area I am pleased to be able to start this role.”
