Bricklaying apprentice highlights the importance of training during National Apprenticeship Week
04 Feb 2021

There are so many options after you leave school and it’s difficult to know what career path to take, never mind the best route in… Josh Corp, 20, a bricklaying apprentice at Bovis Homes’ Priory Fields development in Wells, has praised the scheme for helping him train in his chosen trade. National Apprenticeship Week (8th ?" 14th February) aims to highlight the career path, which has seen a huge increase in employer support over the last decade and combines practical on-the-job training with formal qualifications. Josh, from Midsomer Norton, joined the company as a bricklaying apprentice in August 2018. He has spent one week in every six studying at PGL Training in Exeter to achieve his NVQ level 2, which he has almost finished. Commenting on his experience, Josh said: “I’ve enjoyed my apprenticeship. I love studying while I work; earning and learning at the same time suits me perfectly. Bovis Homes has really looked after me and working in Wells has given me an opportunity to help build thatched homes, which has been interesting. “I’d definitely recommend bricklaying as a career as you’re outside, doing physical work and it’s so satisfying to complete a job well ?" I definitely want to stay in the trade, it’s rare to find a job you love.” Managing director, Dave Farley, said: “National Apprenticeship Week provides a fantastic opportunity to acknowledge the dedication of the apprentices but also the strong team on site supporting them. It’s so important to attract good new employees and also to help and inspire them to progress in their chosen career. Josh is a great member of the team, he’s dedicated, eager to learn and it’s wonderful to hear that he loves his work ?" it’s what it’s all about.” Bovis Homes is part of the Vistry Group and the company currently employs 120 apprentices.
