Vistry apprentice on the pathway to a career in marketing
03 Feb 2022

Marketing apprentice Tom Purveur has discovered a passion for the industry since joining Vistry Group, and is keen to pursue a career in the profession. The 17-year-old, who joined the housebuilder’s Cotswolds region in Bishop’s Cleeve after finishing his GCSEs last summer, is undertaking a Level 3 diploma in marketing with Gloucestershire College as part of his apprenticeship. Vistry is highlighting the benefits of apprenticeships for young people as the country marks National Apprenticeship Week from 7th February. Tom, from Bredon, said: “Business was my favourite subject at school, so I was applying for apprenticeships within that field. I found out about this opportunity through my mum who used to work in the Legal department at Vistry, and I was lucky enough to land the role. “During my interview with Vistry for a business apprenticeship I expressed my interest in marketing, and within a few days of working here, realised that I would be better suited to a marketing role as that’s where my skills and passion lie ?" which the rest of the team acknowledged too. “I did a module on marketing in school and enjoyed it, but other than that I didn’t have any real experience in it. I think it’s only after working every day in a role that you realise what you truly like, at least from my own experience.” Tom’s day-to-day role is varied and sees him working on text and email campaigns and updating the company website among other tasks. He added: “It’s been fun learning something new and getting to grips with marketing for the first time. It’s helped that everyone in the team has been so supportive and welcoming too. “Probably the most enjoyable part of the job has been getting out on site visits to work on brochures, learning about the Vistry brands and seeing my work displayed in the customer-facing sales office. I’ve been attending internal training sessions to learn how to use Vistry’s systems, which have proved really helpful.” Tom currently spends Friday afternoon studying towards his Level 3 diploma and is due to complete the qualification in May 2023. He said: “The apprenticeship work is very different to what I was used to at school, but I am enjoying the process. I chose to go down the apprentice route so I could get first-hand experience of what skills are needed in the workplace, and I think learning on the job has massively helped me. “Once the Level 3 has come to an end, I’d love to stay on with Vistry and continue progressing my career in marketing.” Sharon Nash, marketing manager for Vistry Cotswolds, said: “Apprenticeships are a fantastic route into the housebuilding industry, particularly for getting into competitive roles like marketing. “Tom has proved to be an asset to the business and we look forward to watching him grow in his new position.”
