Five parents from Cheltenham are aiming to raise £10,000 for a charity close to their hearts by embarking on a near 300-mile cycle ride from London to Paris.

Stephanie Spry, Emily Archer, Rachel Jones, Kate Roby and Dom Cook – riding as the Tour de Friends – will get on their bikes in support of Sands, which offers help and advice for anyone affected by the death of a baby.

Some members of the group have been directly affected by such a tragedy and were grateful for the support they received from the charity.

Bovis Homes, which has a regional office in Bishop's Cleeve, is hosting a raffle to support the cause.

“This year, we wanted to do something that was completely out of our comfort zone,” explained Stephanie, regional marketing manager with the national house builder.

“Emily turns 30 this year so we thought this would be a fantastic way to mark it in style at the same time as raising a significant amount of money for an amazing organisation.

“A couple of us have been on a bike once or twice in the last 10 years, so we're not experienced cyclists by any means, but we're all ready to meet the challenge head-on and give it our best.”

The quintet's 278-mile ride will start on August 15 from the Greenwich Observatory in London and finish at the Eiffel Tower in the French capital on August 18.

They are hoping to raise £10,000 for Sands to help fund bereavement care and promote more research into the prevention of baby deaths.

“Sadly, some members of the team have personal experience of the tremendous impact that the death of a baby can have,” said Stephanie.

“We have 11 children between the five of us, so Sands is an organisation that's extremely close to our hearts.

“We've set ourselves quite a challenge in terms of our sponsorship target, but we wanted to aim high and raise enough money to make a real difference.”
