A Winchester-based hospice for children and young adults has been handed a donation of more than £3,500 from a leading local housebuilder with a strong staff connection to the charity.

Naomi House and Jacksplace were chosen as the worthy recipients of the recent fundraising efforts from Bovis Homes' Southern Counties region, whose commercial director has seen his son receive expert care from the hospice in recent months.

John Kelly's son Tom was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a rare muscle-wasting condition, aged just six in 2009. It is a life-limiting disorder with no cure.

“As a family, Tom's condition has been devastating for us, but we have had the pleasure of getting to know the wonderful people at Naomi House, and taking advantage of their inspirational support and respite care,” explains John. “This allows all of us some time for each other, without worrying about Tom's wellbeing, as we know how well he is looked after.”

After hearing Tom's story, the team from Bovis Homes, based in nearby Basingstoke, decided that they would donate funds from their annual raffle and a special charity auction to support the hospice's work. In total they raised £3,650.

Lisa Congdon, new business fundraiser at Naomi House, visited the offices in Basingstoke to receive the cheque from the team.

“Bovis Homes continue to surprise and delight everyone here at the hospices,” she said.

“Their fabulous support has already covered the cost of a highly skilled Naomi House nurse for an entire month and we can't wait to see what they get up to next.

“We are utterly reliant on the support of local businesses to continue our service, and so knowing we have the continued support of the Bovis Homes team is nothing short of brilliant.”

Naomi House and Jacksplace provide expert hospice care to more than 325 life-limited and life-threatened children, young people and their extended families across Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, Berkshire, West Sussex, Surrey and the Isle of Wight.

Bovis Homes Southern Counties region builds new homes across Hampshire, Berkshire, Wiltshire and South Oxfordshire.
