Idsall High School careers fair

Students at Idsall High School have been finding out more about career opportunities in the construction industry from one of the UK's leading house builders at a recent careers fair.

Bovis Homes employees spoke to Year nine students at the school in Shifnal about the variety of careers within the housing industry, ranging from finance, build technology and engineering to sales, marketing and design.

The event aimed to help students find out more about the diverse range of jobs available and discover what employers may look for in suitable applicants. Later this year, the 13 and 14-year-olds will be taking their first steps towards their career paths, as they select the subjects they would like to take for their GCSEs.

Rachel Talbot, Mercia Marketing Assistant for Bovis Homes, said: "It was fantastic to have the opportunity to support the event - we spoke to many enthusiastic students and had the chance to explain that the construction industry is about more than just diggers and laying bricks. There's a huge variety of jobs available and housing is a rapidly expanding sector in the UK."

"It was a pleasure welcoming Bovis Homes to our careers fair. Students took the opportunity to ask many questions, which no doubt helped them with their options choices," says Pam O'Carroll, Head of PSHE at Idsall High School. "It also widened their understanding of the kinds of careers that are offered by the housing industry. Big thanks go to Bovis Homes."

As well as offering work placements and trainee positions, Bovis Homes, which has its Mercia regional headquarters in Dunston, near Acton Trussell, has taken on more than 100 apprentices in recent years, in both trade and office-based jobs.

Cassie Gunn, Regional Build Secretary for Bovis Homes, attended the fair along with other representatives from the company.

Having started as an apprentice for Bovis Homes in 2014, Cassie was able to share her experience within the industry with the students at the event.

After completing her A' levels at Wolgarston High School in Penkridge, Cassie began a Business Administration apprenticeship with Bovis Homes through South Staffordshire College. She said: "I didn't know what I wanted to do when I left school, but I discovered the apprenticeship scheme with Bovis Homes and it seemed just right for me.

"It allowed me to gain work experience as well as get qualifications. Once I had completed my Level 2 NVQ in Business Administration, I got a permanent position with Bovis Homes as an Assistant Build Secretary and in December, I was promoted to Build Secretary. I'm now doing my Level 3, which I will complete in July.

"It was great to have the opportunity to speak to students about my experience of apprenticeships and the industry. It's the first time you need to start to think about what you're going to do as a career, so it was nice to be able to help provide some advice."

Bovis Homes is currently building a selection of three, four and five bedroom homes at its Iddeshale Gardens location in Shifnal.
