A former bricklaying apprentice says he is “elated for his lads” on site as he celebrates winning a national award for housebuilding quality for the third year in a row. Albert Hassall, 56, site manager at Bovis Homes’ Hazelmere development in Haslington, won the National House Building Council (NHBC)’s Pride in the Job Quality Award, after being selected from more than 10,000 candidates across the UK. Albert, who has worked at Bovis Homes, now part of Vistry Group, for five years, said: “It feels fantastic to have won this award for the third time. I’m elated with it all. My team are so proud ?" they’re walking around with their heads held up high. Hard work pays off and this reward is worth every bit of energy you put in. “As a thank you, I’m taking the team to Newcastle for bowling and a few drinks. There are around 60 colleagues who want to join and celebrate. Everyone is over the moon.” Following a challenging year, the father-of-four has a lot of adoration for his team at Hazelmere and they were all glad to return to work after the government lockdown. “Everybody was singing off the same hymn sheet,” said Albert. “They came back and wanted to do a good job. “On our site, we’ve got all the safety measures in place. Everything is clean and tidy; markings are in place so colleagues are two metres apart coming into the compound and there’s plenty of sanitiser available. Something I did pre-Covid on my site, no-one is allowed to mix while working on a home, for example a joiner will go in first, followed by a plumber and then an electrician and so on. My team are well looked after and I wanted to ensure everything was in place for when they came back after lockdown. “For those invited to the development, we’ve created a nature reserve and installed picnic tables and benches so visitors are able to relax and enjoy the wildlife before them.” Joanne Morrison, managing director of Vistry’s Mercia region, said: “We are all so proud of Albert for winning the Pride in the Job Quality Award for the third year in a row. He’s an exceptionally talented site manager and this achievement is a real testament to his dedication, passion and commitment to building high quality homes at Hazelmere. “For those who know Albert, he’s a joy to be around and work with. During such a challenging year in the construction industry ?" with Covid restrictions and social distancing ?" Albert has ensured his team have stayed safe and morale has remained high. The whole team has worked so hard and they’re all truly deserving of this impressive accolade.” Pride in the Job recognises the exceptional contribution site managers make in creating homes of outstanding quality. As well as undergoing spot checks on the day-to-day running of the sites, each candidate is assessed across all areas of site management, including their technical knowledge, consistency in the build process and the quality controls they have in place. The Quality Award winners will now go on to compete for the Seal of Excellence Awards and Regional Winner titles. Albert, who moved from Liverpool to Shavington, Crewe to be closer to the Hazelmere location 18 months ago, won the Seal of Excellence Award in 2019 and 2020. Hazelmere, on Crewe Road at the edge of Haslington, offers an attractive collection of three, four and five-bedroom homes.
