Junction 25 of the M5 is about 30 miles away. From Mildenhall it's only 1 mile to Sherborne railway station which runs trains to London Waterloo and to Exeter via Crewkerne and Honiton. For air travel Bristol International Airport is 44 miles away and Bournemouth Airport 38 miles.

A trip to the shops

There is a wealth of quality shops and specialist services in Sherborne ranging from art and antiques to fashion, books, homewares and interiors. There is a thriving, twice-weekly market and for everyday essentials you have a newsagent's, a post office, a chemist, butchers and a baker's. Supermarket shopping can be done at Sainsbury's and Waitrose and there's a Co-op convenience shop just a few minutes' drive from Mildenhall. For High Street brands The Quedam Centre, just 5 miles away in Yeovil, has more than 40 stores including Monsoon, Topshop, Laura Ashley, M&S and Boots.

Taking time out

Set beside the pretty River Yeo, Sherborne is steeped in history and medieval architecture. Sherborne Abbey, dubbed 'the cathedral of Dorset', dates back to AD 705, and Sherborne Castle and Gardens, built by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1594 is a good day out. Explore the Old Castle ruins, see the Conduit landmark, and visit The Steam and Waterwheel centre and Sherborne Museum. The town has many pubs and restaurants, and there's a golf course and a Sports Centre, as well as football, rugby, and cricket clubs. Watch the wildlife at The Quarr, Sherborne's Local Nature Reserve, or be entertained with drama, comedy, or music at The Powell Theatre. The world's second largest aviation museum, The Fleet Air Arm Museum, is just 8 miles away at Ilchester.

Sherborne is home to a range of state and independent schools. Sherborne Primary School and Sherborne Abbey Primary Schools, cater for four to ten year-olds, and the Gryphon School is a purpose-built, Church of England secondary school with Academy status for 11 to 18-year-olds.
