Getting around Wincanton is in the extreme south-east of Somerset on the borders of Dorset and Wiltshire and is served by a number of major trunk roads. The A303 through the town is the main route from London to Cornwall and links the area with the M5 and the M3. The A37 offers a direct route north to Bristol and to the scenic Dorset coast to the south. The railway station five miles away at Templecombe offers services to major UK cities including London, Exeter and Bath, while coaches run from Yeovil. For air travel Bristol International Airport is approximately 35 miles away and ferry services run from Poole, just 40 miles away.
A trip to the shops The Chase is just half a mile from Wincanton town centre which has a range of local shops and services for everyday needs including a Boots pharmacy, supermarkets, a newsagent and other independent specialist stores. Every month there is a popular Farmers' Market in the town centre. Gillingham, Shaftesbury and Yeovil are not far and have many well known High Street brands and supermarkets.
Taking time out Its rural setting makes Wincanton an ideal location from which to explore the surrounding countryside of Somerset, the Blackmore Vale and neighbouring Dorset and Wiltshire, either on foot, on bicycle or horseback. The town itself has a range of historic pubs, a museum and a wealth of local sports clubs and societies. It has its own Sports Ground, Sports Centre, Skate Park and the famous Wincanton Racecourse. Visit the National Trust's Stourhead House and Gardens, or marvel at the breath-taking views from King Alfred's Tower, a 1771 folly, both within 10 miles. Historic Glastonbury, Shaftesbury and Sherborne are all just a half hour's drive away with Bath and Salisbury about an hour.
Education There are a number of local schools providing education close to The Chase. Wincanton Primary School and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School are both just half a mile away, catering for 4 - 11-year-olds. King Arthur's Community School for 11 to 16-year-olds is on the doorstep in West Hill. Sixth form education is available at Sexeys School, Bruton and there are two independent schools all within four miles.
