Find your new home in an attractive market town Stowmarket has played a major role in the economic and social life of the county of Suffolk for more than 1,000 years. Originally an agricultural town with a booming wool and cloth trade, canalization reached Stowmarket in 1793 and brought new industries and new prosperity.
By the 1820's, Stowmarket was one of the country's major producers of malt and the canal enabled the Towns maltsters to send their products to Ipswich and then by sea to London. Now the old towpath of the Gipping Navigation forms an enjoyable footpath through the Gipping Valley from Stowmarket to the docks at Ipswich. Edward III granted the Town a market charter in July 1347. The Urban District purchased these market rights in 1927 and the market continues to serve the Town every Thursday and Saturday.
Close to the market place is the Museum of East Anglian Life, one of the county's major open air museums. The medieval heart of Stowmarket lies around the parish church of St Peter and St Mary and in the area leading down to the riverbank. The town has many buildings listed by the Department of National Heritage as buildings of special architectural or historic interest and one, the parish church, is classified as being of exceptional interest.
